Newsletter September 2011

Our role is to develop and assist in the implementation of the UWA safety, health and wellbeing programs in order to minimise the risk of injury, illness and property damage.

We provide consultancy and other services to promote best practice and legislative compliance in all University and related activities.

UWA Safety Awards 2011

Nominations for the UWA Safety Awards - Group (Faculty, School, Section), Individual, Safety Leadership (Individual) and Safety Recognition close this week. These awards will be presented on Friday 21st October.

Online OHS modules

Three Occupational Safety and Health online information modules (OSH Introduction, Manual Tasks and Ergonomics, Managing Occupational Risk) have been installed in the UWA Learning Management System WebCT. Each module takes around 30 minutes and is accompanied by a quiz. Users need to be registered in WebCT which can be arranged by emailing to Safety and Health your name, staff number and email address.

National Work Health and Safety Harmonisation – 15 New Draft Codes Released

To support the Model Work Health and Safety Act, Safe Work Australia, have released draft model Codes of Practice and an Issues Paper for public comment.

The following six (6) draft Codes are open for comment until 18th November 2011:

  • First Aid in the Workplace
  • Managing Risks in Construction Work
  • Preventing Falls in Housing Construction
  • Managing Electrical Risks at the Workplace
  • Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals
  • Managing Risks of Plant in the Workplace.

The following nine (9) draft Codes are open for comment until 16th December 2011:

  • Safe Design of Building and Structures
  • Excavation Work; Demolition Work
  • Spray Painting and Powder Coating
  • Abrasive Blasting; Welding and Allied Processes
  • Safe Access in Tree Trimming and Arboriculture
  • Preventing and Managing Fatigue in the Workplace
  • Preventing and Responding to Workplace Bullying.

Global Corporate Challenge 2011

UWA had 19 teams (133 persons) entered in Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) 2011 which concluded on 6th September after 16 weeks.  The UWA participant step average was 12,525 in 2011 (12,839 in 2010).  Seventy eight percent (104 persons) of those entered averaged more than the 10,000 daily steps target.  The leading UWA team was The Pedagogos (Human Resources) with a daily step average of 16,109 for a team distance travelled of 7,970 km.

Mental Health Week – 9th – 15th October 2011

Quick Facts:

  • 1 in 5 Australian adults will experience mental illness every year
  • Almost 50% of Australian will experience mental illness in their lifetime
  • Depression and anxiety are common illnesses, not weaknesses, and with the right treatment, most people recover
  • Help is available and it’s important to seek help early – the sooner the better.

Safe Work Week Australia - 16-22 October 2011

Safe Work Week Australia will be held from 16th – 22nd October 2011.  This is a nationwide event focused on workplace safety. Refer to the WorkSafe WA website for suggestions for activities and to get the 10@10 safety talks.

WorkSafe Forum - Monday 17 October 2011

The Perth WorkSafe Forum will be held at Burswood Convention Centre on Monday 17th October 2011.  Safety and health representatives, managers and supervisors, safety professionals and officers from all industries and interested members of the community are encouraged to attend this annual forum.

Health and safety related posters by third year Chemistry OHS Unit students will be on display in the Bayliss (was MCS) Building Atrium on Friday 14th October 2011. Call in and see what topics took their interest and learn something new.

The University Safety Committee last met on Tuesday 9th August 2011.  The next meeting is on Tuesday 11th October 2011.   Approved minutes from previous meetings are available from the Safety and Health website.
