UWA Safety Awards 2005

Nominations are invited for the following safety awards Group (Faculty, School, Section), Individual and Group Rehabilitation. All staff are encouraged to promote these awards within your work areas and to seek suitable nominations. Nomination to Safety and Health close on 23 September. Safety Related Training

  • ChemAlert Administrator training (2 days) will be held in September. ChemAlert Administrators are key contacts within Faculties, Schools and Units to assist with the implementation of ChemAlert throughout the University.   • A talk on People Based Safety will be held from 1 pm to 1:45 pm on Monday 22 August in CMS Seminar Room G35 (in the new Biochemical Sciences building). Mike Rafferty will review the latest publication by Scott Geller entitled ‘People-Based Safety: The Source (2005)’.It provides the background to understanding People-Based Safety, a people orientated approach to safety issues that goes well beyond traditional engineering controls and compliance with rules.   • On-Line Safety Courses. UWA has been provided temporary access to on-line safety training courses in Accident Reporting, Hazardous Substances, Plant Safety, Risk Management and Safe Driving through Elmo Learning Services at:http://www.elmolearning.com.au/ Your participation and feedback on these courses is sought. To obtain the necessary log in details please contact Safety and Health.

  • Mental Health First Aid Courses. Two courses (all session are from 1 to 4 pm) are arranged for Semester 2, 2005 through Organisational and Staff development Services (OSDS):-

WorkSafe WA The August 2005 SafetyLine magazine is now available and includes:  Good safety design (Midland Brick), manual handling in the health care industry (Joondalup Health Campus, Uniting Church Homes, Murray River Nursing Home), construction industry – new safety awareness training requirements, WorkSafe Forums held in May 2005, and general news about Codes and the Commission. http://www1.safetyline.wa.gov.au/pagebin/wswaslmg0380.htm

Report Shows Importance of Safety and Health Representatives. A new report published by the UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) confirms a link between the appointment of safety representatives and the levels of OHS awareness and performance. The report says safety reps encourage worker participation in risk management and that consultation on OHS improves the working environment. Refer: http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr363.htm

Defibrillators. The University has three semi-automatic defibrillators for use in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. The units are located at the Medical Centre, Human Movement and Security and Parking. Around 30 staff from these areas recently received First Responder training provided by St John Ambulance. In Case of an Emergency (ICE). WA Police have recently promoting the practice of storing the word " I C E " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance, hospital staff or Police will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

HMAS Westralia Fire Report. Australian Defence Industries (ADI) Limited was recently fined $75,000 with $23,000 in costs over its role in the 1998 fire in the HMAS Westralia engine room in which four Navy employees died of acute smoke inhalation. The fire started when flexible hoses ruptured, and one particular hose provided a source of diesel fuel to an extremely hot (at least 310 degrees) indicator cock nearby. ADI had installed the flexible hoses just weeks earlier, to replace solid metal pipes, which had a history of fuel leaks. The new hoses had been operating for less than 40 hours before the fire started. The WA State Coroner’s report is available at:
