Electrical Equipment Safety – Visual Inspection TagsAll electrical equipment in UWA non hostile declared work environments are required to have a ‘Visual Inspection Tag’ and be visually inspected for physical damage on a regular basis. UWA specific tags are now available and can be obtained by contacting Safety and Health on 6488 3938. All electrical equipment in hostile work environments must be tested and tagged by a competent person in accordance with AS/NZS 3760:2003. http://www.safety.uwa.edu.au/electrical_safety Laboratory Safety CourseThe next Laboratory Safety Course will be held on Wednesday 27th June 2007. To enrol please complete the form at: http://www.safety.uwa.edu.au/courses/lab UWA Alcohol & Other Drug Policy - DraftComments or suggestions on the draft UWA Alcohol and Other Drug Policy and contents are invited from the UWA Community. These may be emailed to gemma.crawford@uwa.edu.au by Friday the 29th of June 2007. http://www.tap.uwa.edu.au/uwa_alcohol_and_other_drug_policy Safe Design of Building and Structures – Draft WA CodeThe WA Commission for Occupational Safety and Health has produced a draft code of practice on the safe design of buildings and structures which provides guidelines for meeting legal responsibilities and practical guidelines on how to maximise the safety of the design and is seeking feedback by 23rd July 2007. The draft code includes an outline and explanation of the principles of safe design identified by the Australian Safety and Compensation Council. These are: - Safe design is everyone's responsibility;
- Safe design applies to every phase in the life cycle, and involves eliminating hazards or minimising risks as early as possible;
- Safe design implements risk management;
- Safe design requires knowledge and capability, which should be either demonstrated or assessed by any person with control or influence over design; and
- Safe design relies on communication.
The draft says it will not always be possible to clearly delineate who has responsibility for eliminating or reducing hazards, but as a rule of thumb: "if a person has a capacity to exercise control, the risk is foreseeable and practicable measures are available to either eliminate or control it, then the measures should be undertaken." http://www.worksafe.wa.gov.au/newsite/worksafe/media/pdf/public_comment/safe_design_draft6_code200703.pdf ASCC – Safe Design for Engineering StudentsThe Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) has produced a Safe Design for Engineering Students Resource Package. The Package is intended to support engineering educators in training students about the importance of designing safe products, processes and systems, and to develop safe design skills relevant to professional engineering. http://www.ascc.gov.au/ascc/HealthSafety/SafeDesign/SafeDesignforEngineeringStudentsSDES.htm WorkSafe WA – Safety bulletin to highlight cyclone awarenessWorkSafe WA has recently issued a safety bulletin in relation to cyclone emergency preparation, planning and preparedness. Staff and students in cyclone prone areas are requested to be familiar with the recommendations in this bulletin. http://www.worksafe.wa.gov.au/newsite/worksafe/content/alerts/06-09/alrtspcl0001.html WorkSafe Victoria PublicationsWorkSafe Victoria has recently produced two new guides which would be of relevance to some UWA work areas. The guides and their direct web links are: University Safety CommitteeThe USC last met on 10th April 2007. The next meeting is on 12th June 2007 Approved minutes from previous meetings are available from the Safety and Health website.
