Ultraviolet Radiation Safety Talk – 2.30 pm Wednesday 6th August A number of University Schools and Sections use Ultraviolet (UV) transilluminators and other UV emitting devices. UV radiation poses a hazard to personnel and it is important that all users understand and adopt safe working practices to reduce the risk of exposure. When using transilluminators the maximum permissible exposure per day for uncovered skin at the surface of the source is reached in less than 0.3 seconds. A talk on UV Radiation Safety will be held in Seminar Room 1, Love House, Corner of Broadway and Cooper Street on Wednesday the 6th of August from 2.30 to 3.30 pm. All welcome. WA Safety Conference – 12th – 14th August, Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre The WA Safety Conference 2008 is being held from Tuesday 12th – Thursday 14th August at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre. In conjunction with the Conference is the WA Safety Show 2008 which is a trade show featuring more than 150 specialist safety exhibitors in Pavilions 2 & 3. This is essential training for all managers and supervisors. It provides knowledge of OSH legislation, principles, responsibilities and practices and their applications at UWA. ChemAlert 3 Training – Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th September The UWA ChemAlert version has recently been upgraded to ChemAlert 3. RMT is conducting a two day advanced training course in ChemAlert at Curtin University on the 9th and 10th September. Persons interested in learning more about this training should contact Megan McManus on 6488 7933 or megan.mcmanus@uwa.edu.au. Megan will be conducting in house training for general ChemAlert users later in 2008.
Warden Training – Monday 22nd September 2008 Essential introductory and refresher training for all wardens. Both the introductory (3 hours) course and the refresher course (1 hour) will be conducted on Monday 22nd September 2008. Practice building evacuations will occur in selected buildings during this week. ASCC – New Hazardous Substances Listed The Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) has announced updates for 465 substances and the inclusion of 454 new entries (for a total of 919 entries) on its online listing of hazardous substances. Its Hazardous Substances Information System is a free internet resource providing information on classified hazardous substances. It has encouraged all industries involved with hazardous substances to familiarise themselves with the updated list to ensure safe working practices are maintained. http://hsis.ascc.gov.au/ Nanotechnology Reviews The Commonwealth Government has released two documents that will support its policy and regulatory activities in the nanotechnology areas. The two documents are:
‘The Australian Government Approach to the Responsible Management of Nanotechnology’. The objectives identified in this paper will guide government agencies, including regulators and policy makers in their decision making process and policy development for nanotechnology. The independent report, ‘A review of possible impacts of nanotechnology on Australia's regulatory framework’, was commissioned by the Australian Office of Nanotechnology to assess the adequacy of nanotechnology regulation. It was produced by the Centre for Regulatory Studies at Monash University.
