Sun Safety
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. It is well established that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the major cause of skin cancer and eye damage. Outdoor workers are at greater risk from skin cancer and damage to the eyes because they are exposed to the sun throughout the year and receive significantly more UV radiation than indoor workers.

Social and Christmas Functions
Work related social events can be particularly enjoyable and are a way of developing better working relationships. Don't allow this possibility to be spoiled. By being aware of, and being prepared for the potential unintended consequences, many of the risks associated with these events can be reduced or removed. For further information see :

University Prosecution
An Australian University was prosecuted on 12th October 2007 following the failure of a pressure vessel on 1st June 2005, which resulted in injuries to a staff member and a research student. The vessel had been designed and assembled at the University and was being pressurised for the first time when the incident occurred. The University was convicted on two charges, including the failure to conduct an adequate risk assessment and hazard identification and failure to have in place an adequate system for ensuring that plant was checked and inspected prior to first use, and was fined $37,500. The proceedings from this case are available on request to Safety and Health.
