WorkSafe WA Code of Practice on Safe Building Design
The WA Government has launched a Code of Practice Safe Design of Buildings and Structures, the first such code in Australia which aims to address potential health and safety hazards at the design stage of construction.  The code is aimed at designers, architects, builders and engineers and seeks to help them meet the requirements of the WA workplace health and safety laws.  It explains the legal obligations of persons involved in the design of a building or structure and guidance on ways in which those obligations can be met.

To ensure that health and safety issues are examined before construction, the code contains a new requirement for designers to provide written health and safety reports to clients prior to construction, he says. These reports must include an assessment of potential risks, an outline of the actions taken by the designer to reduce those risks and an identification of hazards that have not been addressed.

New Australian Occupational Health and Safety Code of Practice 2008
The Federal Government has approved the new Occupational Health and Safety Code of Practice 2008, which replaces all 27 previously approved codes and introduces five new ones.  Comcare conducted a review of all codes of practice approved under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1991 in 2005/06 to ensure the codes efficiently supported the Act, and complied with the Legislative Instruments Act 2003 and principles and guidelines set out by COAG.

The review found that in general, the codes no longer provided adequate support to enable duty holders to meet their obligations under the OHS Act and should be updated or replaced.
As a result, the Occupational Health and Safety Code of Practice 2008 was developed to consolidate all codes into one document. The new code has replaced all previously approved codes, eight of which were determined no longer to be necessary and will be replaced by guidance material.

The OHS Code 2008 is separated into 25 parts, each part corresponding to a code of practice. It includes five new codes to address new hazards introduced as a result of the expansion of Comcare. These include:  Risk Management; Occupational Diving; Spray Painting; Abrasive Blasting and Cash in Transit.
The Code has also reserved four parts for the falls in construction, construction and induction training, manual tasks and asbestos in situ codes, which are currently under development.
