SSBA Regulatory Scheme
A new regulatory scheme for Security Sensitive Biological Agents
(SSBA) has been introduced as of January 2009. The scheme
builds on Australia’s obligation under the Biological and
Toxins Weapons Convention and UN Security Council Resolution
1540. Specified agents that are infectious, viable and pathogenic
organisms or active toxins must be reported, stored and handled
appropriately by responsible personnel in secure
facilities. The UWA Institutional Biosafety Committee wrote
to relevant areas in October 2008 and no Tier 1 agents were
reported as being in storage or use. Tier 2 agents will be
regulated from January 2010 and a separate letter regarding Tier
2 Agents will be sent to relevant areas in due course. The
UWA SSBA Responsible Officer is Dr Malcolm Lawson, Manager Animal
Facilities and Biosafety M459, 6488 4702. For further
information on the new SSBA Regulations please see:

Global Challenge – form UWA teams
The Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) program is a cost recovery
program which seeks to motivate participants to undertake regular
exercise. The event runs from 21/05/09 to 22/09/09 (4
months). Participants are required to regularly log onto
the GCC website to record their pedometer readings or km
travelled by bicycle, which forms part of their individual and
their team's (7 persons) running total. They can also view
the running totals of other teams. Based on the distances
covered they are introduced to countries and information to make
the journey more interesting and enjoyable. The cost per person
is $99 for which they receive a backpack with pedometer, other
items and information booklets (with exercise, nutrition and
stress management tips). Safety and Health and UWA Sports
and Recreation are collaborating in promoting this to UWA staff
in 2009. http://gettheworldmoving.com/
