Student Safety

The Australian Safety & Compensation Council (ASCC) has published a new guide to getting students to work safely (see weblink below). It outlines six key guiding principles for teaching health and safety to students who are preparing to enter the workplace. The principles are intended for use by Schools, Teachers and developers of material for teachers and students. The principles include :

a. adopting a whole-school approach

b. developing knowledge and understanding

c. developing skills, attitudes, values and behaviour

d. using a range of student-centred, interactive and innovative teaching & learning strategies

e. ensuring a post-work experience debriefing

f. undertaking programme evaluation and on-going improvement

Sun Safety

With the highest skin cancer rates in the world, it is important for Australian workers to be aware of ways they can reduce their exposure to the sun. Learn more about UV radiation and sun safety in the workplace with new FAQ developed by the Cancer Council WA. AVCC AUSA OHS 2007

The next AVCC Australasian University Safety Association (AUSA) will be held in Melbourne from 4 – 6 July 2007 inclusive. This is the premier conference for tertiary sector OHS professional and is held every two years. The theme for the conference is ‘The Storey So Far’. The venue will be RMIT University (Swanston Street, Melbourne). Expressions of interest are required by 1 December 2006. Abstracts are to be received by February 2007 and Papers are to be received by April 2007.

EAP Newsletter

Our external Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider, Davidson Trahaire Corpsych, produces regular publications. The 2006 summer edition of HR Connections has articles on:

  • Research findings on the prevalence and financial impact of unmanaged depression on Australian organisations
  • The challenge and opportunities with mature age employees
  • The differences across employee age groups in regard to seeking help for personal and work well-being
  • A case study from the retail industry where psychometric assessment has significantly helped to predict and minimise turnover.

University Safety Committee
