The ASCC, in collaboration with the Occupational Dermatology
Education and Research Centre (ODREC), recently developed
Guidance on the prevention of dermatitis associated with wet
work. Wet work is defined as work which requires workers to come
into contact with any form of liquid. Dermatitis arising from wet
work can be avoided with some forward planning in the workplace.
The guide outlines simple, practical ways to protect workers from
unnecessary skin damage, such as wearing cotton gloves or using
soap substitutes rather than solvents or harsh hand cleaners to
remove grease and oil.

UWA Staff Walk 2006
UWA Facilities Management, Safety and Health and Sports are
proud to be hosting the 2006 UWA Staff Walk on Friday 10
November.
All University of Western Australia staff are invited to come
along and enjoy the fresh air and tranquillity of UWA's beautiful
surrounds. This event is being held as part of Walk Week 2006 to
encourage UWA staff to incorporate more walking into their daily
activities, and to highlight the many benefits of walking for
health, relaxation and as a convenient mode of transport.
Walkers will meet for a 12 pm start on Riley Oval outside the
University Club, and will head south
along the Matilda Bay foreshore and through the southern campus
before returning to finish at Riley Oval once again. Participants
will be given a light lunch on the University Club terrace,
catered by the University Club who are sponsoring the event.
Registration is compulsory, and can be completed at the
Facilities Management Website http://www.fm.uwa.edu.au/about/sustainability/staff_walk.
Social and Christmas Functions
Work related social events can be particularly enjoyable and
are a way of developing better working relationships. Don't allow
this possibility to be spoiled. By being aware of, and being
prepared for the potential unintended consequences, many of the
risks associated with these events can be reduced or removed. For
