UWA Safety Awards 2006

The presentation function for the UWA Safety Awards 2006 will be held on Monday 23 October.  Nominees and safety personnel will be sent invitations.  Anyone else wishing to attend should contact  Belinda Ireland (6488 3938, safety@uwa.edu.au) by 19 October.

Draft UWA Emergency Procedures booklet – comments invited

Previously emergency procedures and contact information was contained in the UWA Contact Directory.  Since these are no longer printed an alternative means by which essential emergency information can be made readily available is required.  Comments are invited on a draft UWA Emergency Procedures booklet. It is intended that the booklet be A5 sized and colour coded with a spiral top for ease of use.  It is intended that they be readily available by telephones to ensure all staff have ready access to a copy.  Comments on the draft are required by 27 October 2006 and should be made via email   (safety@uwa.edu.au ), or by contacting Mike Rafferty (6488 2307).  The draft booklet is available at:   http://www.safety.uwa.edu.au/whats_new   (September 2006). 

Mental Health Week

Mental Heath Week is an annual national awareness week, aimed at promoting the importance of mental health and wellbeing to the wider community.  It is being held from 8 to 14 October 2006.  UWA will be hosting two lunchtime presentations in conjunction with the University's external Employee Assistance Provider (EAP), Davidson Trahaire Corpsych.  All staff are encouraged to attend.  Both talks will be held in Lecture Room G33 in Chemical & Molecular Sciences. No need to enrol, just turn up on the day.

Emotional Resilience - Keeping Yourself Going when the Going Gets Tough - Monday 9 October from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm

  • Understand your own courage to continue - and where you should focus for success.  
  • Planning and setting goals to help you focus
  • Learn strategies to overcome or work around the difficulties you are facing

Building and Maintaining Effective Workplace Relationships - Thursday 12 October from 1.00 pm to 2.00pm

  • Identify the different types of workplace relationships and assess how healthy yours are
  • Identify the key factors that influence the nature and quality of workplace relationships
  • Recognise and manage different communication styles
  • Learn key skills and strategies to achieve effective individual and team communication

Safe Work Australia Week

Safe Work Australia is being held nationally for the second time from 22 to 28 October 2006.   A number of events are being held nationally, within WA and at UWA during this week.  For  information on WA events see:  http://www.worksafe.wa.gov.au/newsite/worksafe/pages/wswaweek0001.html

UWA Manual Handling Seminar and Workshop

UWA Safety and Health will be holding a session on managing manual handling hazards on Wednesday 25 October from 12.00 noon to 2.00 pm in the Main Function Room at the Watersports Complex on Matilda Bay. Included will be

  • Displays on engineering solutions and mechanical equipment available e.g. the latest in trolley design.
  • The Occupational Therapists will be providing advice on back care, aids and appliances such as back cushions will be on display. 
  • A presentation on practical solutions that areas at UWA have implemented following development of local manual handling risk management plans will be held at 12.30 pm.
  • 1.00 pm - group session on manual handling technique - come along and participate if you are interested in how to move things and lift things correctly. (Please wear appropriate clothing, e.g. trousers or short and no heels, enclosed shoes).

WorkSafe WA Forum

The WorkSafe WA Forum is being held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday 25 October 2006 from 8.00 am to 4.15 pm.  The Forum is targeted at safety and health representatives, managers and supervisors, safety officers and safety professionals from all industries including the mining sector and interested members of the community.  Some of the issues to be addressed include incident investigation techniques, provisional improvement notices, workplace bullying and work life balance and working hours. The September 2006 issue of the Safety Line Magazine is now available at:

Forklift Licence

Adoption in July 2007 of the recently declared National Standard for Persons Performing High Risk Work into the WA OSH Regulations will mean persons wishing to obtain a forklift licence will be required to undergo training against a set of national competencies by a registered training organisation.  Currently in WA, there is no requirement for obtaining a forklift licence. All that is required is appropriate training documentation.  Forklift operator training is required to be in accordance with the National Guidelines for Occupational Health and Safety Competency Standards for the Operation of Loadshifting Equipment and Other Types of Specified Equipment [NOHSC: 7019 (1992)].  For more information refer to:

Community Safety Month – October 2006

RAC Community Safety Month aims to raise community awareness of safety and the prevention of injuries, violence and crime through the showcasing of Government and community safety programs, events and activities. This year the focus is on six themes: Crime Prevention, Road Safety , Emergency Services, Injury Prevention, Water Safety and Work Safety .
