Call for Nominations

Nominations open on Monday 9th March 2009 and close on Tuesday 24th March 2009

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984, employees are legally entitled to nominate and, if necessary, elect workplace safety and health representatives. The University has been divided into 64 workplaces. Nominations are now being sought for 21 workplaces which are either vacant or the current representative's term expires at the end of March 2009.

Nominations are open to any current UWA employee who has been employed at the University or in a similar work capacity elsewhere for a minimum of two years. All employees in the particular workplace will be entitled to vote in the election should an election be necessary. For information on the nomination process please see: http://www.safety.uwa.edu.au/policies/shr_nomination

The Act provides for paid leave for up to five days for representatives to attend safety training. The role of a representative is to act on behalf of all employees and to liaise with management on safety and health matters. Representatives have the right to inspect any part of the workplace, to investigate all accidents and are expected to notify the employer of any hazardous situation. The term of office is two (2) years. A safety and health representative incurs no civil liability arising from their performance or failure to perform any function under the Act.

For further information on the roles and responsibilities of representatives refer to Part IV of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 which may be accessed via the Worksafe WA web site at http://www.slp.wa.gov.au/legislation/agency.nsf/docep_main_mrtitle_650_homepage.html

If more than one nomination from a workplace is received then a ballot may be required. It is planned to declare successful nominations on 31st March 2009.
