UWA Safety Award (Individual)

The UWA Safety Award (Individual) is to acknowledge outstanding contributions by individual employees in establishing and maintaining high standards of occupational safety and health activities and achievements within the University.

The contributions to workplace safety may be at a University, Faculty, School or Section level and have occurred or were maintained since the commencement of calendar year 2006.

Evaluation will take into account the different circumstances of the work areas.

Nominations must not be more than 1,500 words (3 pages) and may be prepared by the person being nominated or any other University employee(s). It is recommended that the person being nominated endorse the submission.

UWA Rehabilitation Award (Group)

The UWA Rehabilitation Award (Group) is to acknowledge work-areas who have demonstrated remarkable support and assistance in aiding employees with their return to work or with maintaining their employment following an injury or onset of a medical condition. The employee’s injury/medical condition need not be work related or involve workers’ compensation.

The University seeks to facilitate the return to work for all employees who have been injured. The Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 1981 (WA) and WorkCover provide guidelines which contain an expectation that injured employees should be supported with an early return to work. In some situations, this involves a work-area giving considerable support and flexibility to the returning employee, for example, providing alternative or modified duties. Co-workers are also sometimes needed to help by backfilling for the person, and as a consequence have readjusted work loads. Likewise with non-work related injuries, diseases or medical conditions similar accommodations and adjustments may be required for the staff member.

The nomination for this award should be from a senior manager or in-line manager and be related to a situation where an injured employee or more than one employee has been assisted since the beginning of 2005. While the identity of the employee/s will be kept confidential (if the employee requests this) in smaller work-areas it could be difficult to guarantee this confidentiality. Therefore the nomination for this award can only proceed with the assent of the employee if confidentiality is likely to be at risk.

In applying for this award, please state the:-
• Things that were done by the manager, supervisor and the team to assist.
• Actions or behaviours that were demonstrated during the process.
• What was the result of the above? What were the benefits to the team?

The nomination may be in bullet point format addressing the above and should not exceed 2 pages.

Written nominations must be submitted to Safety and Health (M350) or email to Michael.Rafferty@uwa.edu.au
by 21st September 2007.

A selection panel comprising of the Chair, University Safety Committee; Director, Human Resources; Director, Facilities Management; Manager, Safety and Health; and Occupational Therapist, Safety and Health (or their nominees) decide on each award by 5th October 2007. Additional information may be sought as required. All heads and representatives (or their nominees) of the nominated sections and nominated individuals will be invited to a special function on the 23rd October 2007, at which the award(s) for 2007 will be made. The awards will consist of a certificate, a University Co-op Bookshop book voucher and recognition throughout the University.
