Written nominations for the following UWA Safety Awards are required by Friday 2nd October 2009 UWA Safety Award (Group)
The UWA Safety Award (Group) is to acknowledge best practice approaches and achievements in occupational safety and health management by Faculties, Schools or Sections. The 2009 award will be for approaches and achievements made since the commencement of calendar year 2008. Evaluation will take into account the different circumstances of the nominated areas and the extent and significance of the systems approach and safety achievements made since 2008. Nominations must not be more than 3,000 words (5 pages) and should be based on criteria used by the WorkSafe Plan from WorkSafe WA. The five elements and standards used are: Element | Standard | Management Commitment | There is commitment to achieving high standards of occupational safety and health performance through effective safety management | Planning | Planning is used to establish and maintain a safety management system that is set up to continuously improve occupational safety and health | Consultation | A mechanism for consulting with employees has been developed and is working effectively | Hazard Management | There is an effective system to identify hazards and assess and control risks | Training | Training is organised to reduce the risk of work-related injury and disease and is evaluated to ensure its effectiveness |

The UWA Safety Award (Individual) is to acknowledge outstanding contributions by individual employees in establishing and maintaining high standards of occupational safety and health activities and achievements within the University. The contributions to workplace safety may be at a University, Faculty, School or Section level and have occurred or were maintained since the commencement of calendar year 2008. Evaluation will take into account the different circumstances of the work areas. Nominations must not be more than 1,500 words (3 pages) and may be prepared by the person being nominated or any other University employee(s). It is recommended that the person being nominated endorse the submission. UWA Safety Leadership Award The UWA Safety Leadership Award is to encourage the recognition of heads, managers and supervisors for their efforts to improve or sustain high safety standards either at a Business Unit or at a Corporate level. Nominations must not be more than 1,500 words (3 pages) and may be prepared by the person being nominated or any other University employee(s). It is recommended that the person being nominated endorse the submission. UWA Safety Recognition Award The UWA Safety Recognition Award does not have any specified criteria. It may be for groups or individuals. Nominations may be made to recognise the effors of current safety personnel or for a recently completed safety related activity or project. The nomination should not exceed 1,000 words (2 pages). Written nominations for each award must be submitted to Safety and Health (M350) by Friday 2nd October 2009 A selection panel comprising of the Chair, University Safety Committee; Director, Human Resources; Manager, Safety and Health; and Senior Occupational Therapist, Safety and Health (or their nominees) will decide on each award. Additional information may be sought as required. All heads and representatives (or their nominees) of the nominated sections and nominated individuals will be invited to a special function at the Vice-Chancellery during Safe Work Australia Week, 25th - 31st October 2009, at which the award(s) for 2009 will be made.
