Influenza, commonly referred to as the 'flu', is an infectious disease caused by ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae (the influenza viruses).
The symptoms of human influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue; some people have diarrhoea and vomiting.
If you become sick or unwell with respiratory or flu-like symptoms (particularly returning from travel) seek assessment with your doctor. In the first instance contact should be made by telephone.
